Our Philosophy and Our Beginnings

Shiloh Hounds® was established in 1978. We started with champion show dogs that were also man trailers, and we were on call for police departments for several years. Since the mid 1980's our emphasis has shifted towards showing bloodhounds in conformation and obedience, therapy dog work, and breeding. We currently have three certified therapy dogs that visit local nursing homes and the regional VA hospital. (For more information on therapy dogs, go to Therapy Dogs Inc.) We place puppies in man trailing homes, but due to time constraints, we are no longer on call for the police. The majority of our dogs are champions, but most importantly, they are members of our family. Our bloodhounds are housedogs; they are not kennel dogs. Our family usually includes hounds ranging in age from youngsters to great grand parents. All of our pups are raised in our house; they learn all the sounds, smells, and lessons of living inside with our family. We place our dogs in homes that share our goals- to have a well bred canine companion member of the family who is well behaved and who shares the home with the family.

The goal of our breeding program is to create the bloodhound described in the breed standard. Each breeding is carefully researched and planned. We do not breed litters for the purpose of selling pups for income. Since our litters are bred to ensure future Shiloh generations, we usually keep or co-own a pup from each litter. This assures the continuation of our bloodline; we are currently working on our seventh generation. The pedigrees of most of our puppies contain 4-6 generations of OFA certified (against hip dysplasia) hounds. Before breeding, our hounds are also screened for other breed health problems, including heart, eye, skin and ear problems, and of course....TEMPERAMENT! No matter how beautiful the dog, it should have a sound body AND mind. Our bitches are not bred before 2 years of age, and often not bred for the first time until 3 or 4 years of age. This allows us more time to evaluate the health and temperament of our girls, and to know they will be suitable moms. Our bitches usually do not produce more than two litters in their lifetime. We average one litter of puppies a year.

We have been active members of the American Bloodhound Club and Southeastern Bloodhound Club for almost 20 years.
