Thank you for considering Mayflower Bloodhounds in your puppy search. Please read this page and then fill out our questionnaire before you call us. The next few questions are here not for you to answer and send to us but are here to make you think about your decision. We want you to be sure you are truly commited to caring for a dog for years. After reading the rest of this page if you are still interested, fill out our questionnaire. and send it to us.If you can honestly say yes to all of these questions then you may be ready for a Mayflower bloodhound puppy. Keep reading. Give us a call. Fill out our questionnaire. And be prepared for a meeting or two with us before we agree to sell you a puppy.
- Do you have an adequately fenced area where your dog can run and play?
- Will you allow this dog to play outside in a fenced area for the most of its day?
- Do you have a Vet that you know well and can call on when your dog needs care? If not, are you willing to seek out a Vet prior to purchasing one of our puppies?
- Will you take your dog to your vet on a yearly basis?
- Will you feed your dog a quality food?
- Will you spend adequate time with your dog every day?
- Will you attend some Obedience classes with your dog within the first six months to a year of its time with you? But, remember a puppy only needs about ten minutes of training per session. What it needs mostly is socialization - an opportunity to learn and play with other puppies on a regular basis away from its home. It also needs for its training sessions to be FUN. Can you give that puppy the kind of time that will be needed for such training and do you have the patience for it?
- Are you prepared for the problems that come with puppyhood such as: accidents, problems potty training, chewing habits, crying at night, tearing up your prized possessions?
- Are you willing to meet with us before purchasing one of our puppies. (We really have a problem selling to people we've never met.)
- Do you understand that a bloodhound puppy will grow very fast and weigh as much as 100 pounds by the time its a year old? If you did not realize this the question is - can you handle it?
- Do you realize that bloodhounds are very active and playful, and that a bloodhound can be puppy like in behaviors as late as two years old and sometimes even later?
- Do you understand that a puppy and or a dog is a living being capable of feeling pain, cold, heat, hunger and that you are responsible for caring for its needs?
- Are you willing to be responsible for this living being for its entire life which could be as much as eight to 13+ years? Are you ready for this kind of commitment?
- Are you willing to give the puppy or dog back to us should things not work out?
- Are you willing to stay in contact with us and keep us informed about the health and well being of this pup for its entire life?
Our Goals
We at Mayflower Bloodhounds have bred 2 litters in eight years of owning bloodhounds. In due time at the most we will probably average a litter every two to four years once we begin breeding our dogs, and at the least it will be once every 7 to 10 years. We breed our dogs for the purpose of showing them in AKC Conformation shows. We hope to produce conformational puppies who are both sound in mind and body. We promote health checks following the OFA guidelines for hips, elbows, patella, thyroid and cardiac. www.offa.org is a site that will inform you more about it. We promote the CERF program and are striving to have healthy bloodhound eyes.
What We Are Doing At This Time
We have five champions at this time. Maytoo got her CGC at 11 months old. We hope to eventually get the CGC certificate for some of her littermates. We are training Myles in AKC tracking. Our Future Stars are debuting in the show arena this year. Heaven and Sonny are already major pointed. LJ is now a champion at 15 months old! Also known as, Ch Mayflower's Beulah Land, LJ has amazed us with her wins. She even took a BOB and a Hound Group Four win at the young age of 10 months old. All of our dogs have had at least 8 weeks of obedience classes. Our dogs are an important part of our lives and we enjoy spending time with them.
You Want A Puppy
1. You MUST fill out the questionnaire.
2. You MUST sign a contract based on what we negotiate once we decide we can work with you and that we have a pup for you.
3. Pups can be selected by you based on first come first serve after we've divided what we feel are pet quality pups from the show quality pups.
4. All of our dogs that are used for breeding purposes MUST be OFA'd for hips, elbows, and patella. Remember go to www.offa.org for more information.
5. When the pups turn four months old we insist on six to eight weeks of obedience classes. We are willing to give obedience and handling classes at our home ourselves personally to our customers when the pups turn four months old once a week for a period of six weeks. If you live too far away it will be your responsibility to see to it that this gets done with a local trainer in your area.
6. Show quality dogs must be shown at major pointed shows six times a year for three years. This adds up to three weekends out of a year. If the dog is truly show quality we will do what we can to help you show the dog if you are near us. We prefer you show your own dog but we will help you if we can.
7. Search and Rescue dogs - if you are using one of our dogs for SAR you must attend one SAR seminar a year for three years and send us record of proof you have done this.
8. Pets and/or pet quality pups are sold on limited registration.
9. We will sponsor you and help you to become a member of the American Bloodhound Club.
Thank you for taking a look at our dogs and considering us as a part of your future in bloodhounds.
